Chokes and strangles (commonly but somewhat incorrectly referred to as “air chokes” and “blood chokes” respectively) are a common form of submission. Chokes involve constriction of the windpipe. Strangles involve constriction of the carotid artery.

1. Sleeper Hold:

The lateral vascular neck restraint (also called sleeper hold) was once a widely taught blood choke in law enforcement, and was performed from behind by putting an arm around the neck with the crook of the elbow over the midline of the neck. By pinching the arm together while assisting with the free hand, the carotid arteries and jugular veins were compressed on both sides of the neck. This hold did not put any pressure on the airway, but an improperly applied hold could quickly turn into an air choke if the person being strangled resisted the hold by attempting to turn around.

2. Ryote Jime:

Two hand choke from the front grabbing the collars with the thumbs inside and turning your fists into the sides of the neck.

3. RNC:

The Rear naked choke (RNC) is a chokehold in martial arts applied from an opponent’s back. Depending on the context, the term may refer to one of two variations of the technique, either arm can be used to apply the choke in both cases.

4. Nami Juji Jime:

Normal cross lock from the front with arms crossed grasping the collars with the thumb inside.

5. Kata Juji Jime:

Half cross lock with one hand fingers-in and one hand thumb-in.

6. Gyaku Juji Jime:

Reverse cross lock from the front with the fingers inside.

7. Arm triangle Choke:

Arm triangle choke (Arm triangle) is a generic term describing blood chokeholds in which the opponent is strangled in between his or her own shoulder and the performer’s arm.

8. The Guillotine:

The Guillotine choke is a chokehold in martial arts applied from in front of the opponent. The choke involves using the arms to encircle the opponent’s neck in a fashion similar to a guillotine.

9. Gracie Choke:

Grab your arm/gi with one arm, putting your opponents head in between your arms, grab the elbow/gi on the other arm.

10. Gi Choke:

Use the opponents Gi/uniform to choke him by hold in one side and bringing a part of his gi/uniform from the other side over to this side (then pull with one arm and press with the other).

We first train our technique in Empty Hand to make the technique it self perfect, once the student started to get a understanding of the techniques and how they work, then we test the techniques in sparring. We do allow stuff like “sucker punch” and “dirty tricks”, as long as the student dont damage each other, since we try make our style for defence on the street (even that many of the things we do can also be used in tournaments and students are welcome to do so)…..

The rules when we do sparring are:

Dont damage each other, train in a safe way.

Semi-Contact to the body and slaps with open hand to the face (not the face area like eyes, nose and mouth) is okay….

Dirty tricks is also allowed…..

Note: The slaps to the face are made like hook, backfists and uppercut just with open hand. Cross is allowed to but you just stop the strike both to avoid damage and to show/train control in your technique….

1. Sparring with the Eskrima Stick:

We do sparring in many different ways, below is a video with me and Grandmaster John Villasin training “the Play” a form of sparring from the Villasin Balintawak Style:

This one is where you jump up and try to take your opponent down in the guard it has 3 outcomes (A, B and C)……

A:

This is where you jump up and succed in taking your opponent down with you in the guard:

B:

This one is where you dont succed in getting your opponent in the guard, but he keeps standing there with you around him….

C:

This one is where you have to much speed in your takedown and you end with your opponent in the mount….

Takedown 3:

This one is where you let your self fall backwards with your opponent over your leg and your elbow hitting his Solar Plexus, when landing…..
This can also be used as a counter as a grab around the neck…

Note: Remember that if you imagine a triangle in front and behind your opponent (with the tips away from him). Then if you bring his head or arms to the tip of either of these triangle, then it will break his balance…..
This knowledge will make you able to better improvise, make new techniques and adapt to a attacker…..

1. Forward Roll:

We start by training this roll on mats to be safe, later we learn to do it on a hard surface to make it more real….
Remember when you do the forward roll you are able to see first the opponents in front of you and just before you roll if there is any opponents behind you, pick up a weapon, roll over a obstacle, roll under a obstacle, kick or even use it as a takedown….

2. Backward Roll:

We also start on mats with this one and later we learn to do it on a hard surface to make it more real….
This roll can be used as a counter to the shout…

3. Forward Breakfall:

This teaches you to protect your face and the front of your body against damage if you fall forward…..

4. Backward Breakfall:

This teaches you how to protect the back of your head and how to land correct if you fall backwards…..

5. Sidewards Breakfall:

These teaches you how to land correct if you where thrown or for some other reason did land on your side….
You can make a variation of this one and the sweep, where you bring the opponent down with you into ground fight and bring him into the mount….
