The place to look in Martial Arts is different from style to style some look at the chest (because its close to the arms and legs), others look at the throat/shoulder level (to spot movement in the shoulders), i tell my students to mainly look in the eyes and if they need scan the centerline.

I have many reasons for saying so, some of the reasons i tell my students to use Eye Contact is that it:

  1. Shows you most of your opponents body with your Peripheral Vision (which will also be trained by looking in the eyes).
  2. Shows your opponents shoulder movements.
  3. Tells you if your opponent is out of balance and its time to attack him.
  4. The legs are not as fast as the arms….
  5. Many times new people within Martial Arts shows you where they will attack by first looking there….
  6. The eyes can also be used to play a trick on your opponent.
  7. When you look a opponent in the eyes and shows no fear, it also has a intimidating effect.
  8. It also teaches good values to learn to have eye contact and can be used in your every day life (just don’t mix it up with eyeballing people, thats not the same :) ).
