The Kiai is a yell that commonly comes from the stomach and up, sometimes the Kiai can also be made silent, but most of the time its made as a form of power yell.

This is some of the reasons for using a Kiai:

  1. To startle a opponent.
  2. To protect the body against strikes
  3. To focus and coordinate breathing, bodymovement and mind.
  4. To gain a rush.
  5. To attract attention from people around you if you are being attacked.
  6. To gain power in a technique.

The Kiai empties air from the lungs and makes you able to take a strike to the upper body without lossing your breath, it also tense the muscles in your stomach area (lower body), so if you got a strike there while doing the Kiai it would do less harm….

The Kiai is also good for learning how to breathe out when you strike and this will give you more power in your techniques…. :)

Kiai is also often used to gain a rush doing sparring/fighting since it kind of powers you up……The Kiai can also be used to startle a opponent and take away his fighting spirit, since it demoralize your opponent….

Note: Remember there is a different Kiai for each of the mentality of the elements within Ninjutsu (X-Kans)…..
